Week 11 Posting - Social Engineering and Social Media

Hello everyone and welcome to week 11! In just seven days (as of Feb. 26) we'll all be one semester closer to our goals.

This week we learned about network security threats, including social engineering.

Wikipedia has this to say about it:
Social engineering, in the context of information security, refers to psychological manipulation of people into performing actions or divulging confidential information. A type of confidence trick for the purpose of information gathering, fraud, or system access, it differs from a traditional "con" in that it is often one of many steps in a more complex fraud scheme.

We are all subject to social engineering threats on a daily basis, from scam emails to shady websites and ads, these threats are a part of life in the current state of the Internet, both in and out of the workplace.

This got me thinking, how much of a threat is social media to privacy of data or confidential information?

Employees with a social media presence not only represent the company to a certain extent. Right or wrong, they also have the power to share information far and wide if they so choose.

This article from TechCrunch talks about an anonymous workplace app known as Blind. Blind allows users to chat anonymously with other employees from the same companies. The issue here right away, and the reason for the article is the fact that one users post went viral. It also names the employee who posted it. Two things antonymous with anonymity. I do not think it was wrong for this woman to shed light on what happened to her, but it raises a larger issue, and that is whether or not anything we say on the internet is really anonymous. If  history has taught us anything, the answer to that question is "probably not"

Do you think employees should be able to discuss work related matters on a platform like this? Should there be some sort of oversight to ensure that confidential information is not put at risk? Let me know in the comments or the discussion board, and I will see you all for the last post of the semester next week!
